Last Unicorn, Uncut

Post by virgil »

I watched a DVD release of the Last Unicorn about a week ago, and I was told that the original release had almost an hour's extra scenes that had been cut from it; such as the whole love triangle between the Unicorn, Schmendrick, and Molly, as well as the bandits seeing Robin Hood because they were drugged by Schmendrick rather than any actual magic on his part.

How does one get ahold of a completely unedited version of the movie? I've been told that one of the DVD or Blu-Ray releases have it, but I'm getting conflicting reports, and I've yet to see any review mention edits that restore scenes as significant as what I've been told.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

Grab the old VHS.

I don't know about cut scenes, but I can tell you that the first DVD release came out in 2004, and there wasn't much editing done to it. They didn't even spruce up the quality - it looks like VHS footage.

I can tell you that after perusing the offerings on Amazon, the oldest VHS I could find info for has a total run time of 95 minutes, while the DVD released in 2004 claims a run time of 92 minutes and the 25th anniversary edition (which is censored), has a run time of 93 minutes. So whoever said there's an hour missing is stretching the truth by about an hour.

All that said, however... Wait until next year.

Beagle has been embroiled for quite some time in a lawsuit with the media company that currently owns the rights to the film, but they recently settled and are planning cool stuff for 2012 (It's the film's 30th anniversary).

I thought this thread was going to be about unicorn foreskins. So disappointed.

Yes, I saw this thread and thought pretty much the same. Do you think it's a bad sign that our minds went straight to unicorn penii?

Yes, yes it is.
I've got at least two people independently mentioning stuff like the drug scene and a love triangle being in the very first release of the VHS of the movie before being very quickly edited. But I've yet to see any mention of them online, so I'm confuzzled.
I wasn't that put off by the quality on the DVD, so I doubt their 30th anniversary remaster is going to mean much of anything...unless they bring back those lost scenes.
